Public Administration in the context of the information society: milestones in the development of electronic government

Abstract

Bearing in mind the current context, in which Information and Communication Technologies – ICTs permeate the most diverse spheres of daily life, transforming them, this article proposes to analyze their progressive insertion in the Public Administration, on the global and national scenes, which ended up culminating in the phenomenon of e-government, on the way to an evolutionary stage called digital government. However, it is an asynchronous process, depending on local variables, such as the financial resources to implement the necessary technological tools and, especially, the political will to make them available to citizens, allowing greater and better access to public services and, in addition, more information and citizen participation, an aspect that also makes up e-government. It is considered that the recovery of e-government milestones, in the context of the information society, will raise a greater understanding of this interdisciplinary phenomenon and, as a result, will culminate in greater debates about its potential to improve the link between the Public Administration and citizens, as well as to unveil the obstacles that are inherent to it in each reality. The study is based on bibliographical research and extensive documentary research to achieve the proposed objective.
